33rd Annual National Philanthropy Day Luncheon to Celebrate Dallas' Outstanding Philanthropists and Volunteers

The Greater Dallas Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) is set to host the 33rd annual luncheon titled “Stories Worth Telling,” in recognition of National Philanthropy Day. This event aims to unite local nonprofits, volunteers, funders, foundations, as well as business and community members to celebrate the admirable contributions of many citizens supporting various noble causes. The luncheon will take place on Friday, November 9, 2018, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Dallas in the Reunion Ballroom.

The keynote speaker this year will be Rodney D. Bullard, who serves as the Vice President of Community Affairs at Chick-fil-A, Inc., and is also the Executive Director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation. He is an accomplished author of “Heroes Wanted: Why the World Needs You to Live Your Heart Out.” This annual gathering is brought to attendees by South Texas Money Management (STMM).

“The citizens of Dallas are passionate, driven, and generous volunteers and philanthropists, but that’s just the beginning,” stated Jeanie Wyatt, CFA, founder and CEO of STMM. “We rely heavily on our nonprofits to fulfill many of the basic needs in our city. With over 1,000 nonprofits in Dallas, having a professional organization like AFP is crucial for helping fundraising professionals generate more support effectively and ethically.”

Luncheon Chair William Bryant has announced the recipients of the 2018 awards:

Outstanding Philanthropist Jack Furst, nominated by the Boy Scouts of America, is recognized for his extensive contributions of time, talent, and resources to improve the world around him. Furst emphasizes that confidence propels progress, asserting that anything is possible with the right momentum. As a large-scale thinker, he takes the lead on transformative youth-focused initiatives. Furst has coordinated massive contributions, such as over $400 million toward the construction of the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia when called upon by Boy Scouts national leadership. His numerous philanthropic actions include directing campaigns for the Circle Ten Council, establishing the Jack D. Furst Aquatics Base, and driving various educational initiatives. In addition, Furst supports an array of organizations including YMCA, Special Olympics International, and the North Texas Food Bank. He serves on various boards and is recognized for his contributions through several awards.

“Jack Furst embodies philanthropy through his heart-led actions and shares invaluable experiences and wisdom,” commented Bobby B Lyle. “He is a leader whose example inspires many, serving as a role model across generations.”

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Kaki Hopkins, nominated by the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, has dedicated nearly four decades volunteering for more than 14 organizations, frequently chairing events and lending her expertise. Her achievements have resulted in millions in fundraising for various initiatives. Kaki has played key roles in the Dallas Opera, Dallas County Medical Society, and countless others, working tirelessly to enhance fundraising efforts and ensure her committees thrive. Known for her innovative ideas and thorough preparation, she has earned numerous honors recognizing her remarkable leadership.

“Kaki embodies the spirit of innovation in fundraising, consistently surpassing expectations with each project,” noted Sarah Warnecke, a fellow community volunteer. “She initiates and enhances projects to ensure they achieve their utmost potential.”

Outstanding Foundation Joe M. and Doris R. Dealey Family Foundation, nominated by Texas Health Resources, was established to carry forth the philanthropic legacy of the Dealey family. The foundation has continuously supported a variety of community initiatives, significantly enhancing health care accessibility and welfare. Doris Dealey was particularly impactful in establishing child care facilities for Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas. The foundation’s endeavors include contributions to various organizations such as the Dallas Foundation, Parkland Foundation, and innovative programs addressing the needs of sexual assault victims.

“The Dealey Foundation is integral to the philanthropic legacy of George Bannerman Dealey, making profound contributions to community well-being,” stated Brent Christopher from the Children’s Medical Center Foundation.

Outstanding Corporation Pioneer Natural Resources, nominated by Dallas CASA and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity, has cultivated a culture dedicated to community betterment and support for children’s initiatives. The corporation has been a significant contributor to Dallas CASA, significantly impacting their programs since inception. Pioneer’s fundraising has amounted to millions, aiding a variety of community development initiatives and providing opportunities for families and children.

“Pioneer’s commitment to our community is extraordinary,” expressed David Crawford, CEO of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. “Their support enriches the lives of those we serve, and we are truly grateful to have them as partners.”

Outstanding Fundraising Executive Luanne Samuel, CFRE, nominated by Jana Haigood of the Alcuin School, possesses over 24 years of fundraising expertise. She initiated a development position at the International School of Geneva and has since played vital roles in numerous organizations, garnering nearly $80 million for multiple initiatives including educational programs and protective services for at-risk children. Luanne’s contributions have significantly strengthened the operations and outreach of every organization she has assisted.

“Luanne provides lasting benefits to the organizations she serves through her exceptional leadership and commitment,” stated Jana Haigood.

Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Jingle Bell Mistletoe, nominated by The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), has made a substantial impact by providing nearly 300,000 nutritious meals to those in need through their creative fundraising efforts. What began as a simple idea from a young girl, Stella Wrubel, has blossomed into an inspiring movement involving the sale of mistletoe to support those facing hunger in North Texas.

“These young leaders are truly committed to making a difference, showcasing their determination and innovation in the fight against hunger,” remarked Jeffrey King of NTFB.

The Greater Dallas Chapter of AFP has celebrated National Philanthropy Day since 1981, attracting over 500 attendees who include AFP members and community leaders each year. This day is dedicated to honoring the valuable contributions of philanthropy and those engaged in its many processes, highlighting the significant impact they have on society at large.
