9 Tools to Stay Connected During COVID

By Katie McCallum | Houston Methodist

Although nothing can truly substitute the warmth of in-person interactions like hugs and high-fives, there are 10 excellent apps, devices, and online services that can help you maintain connections with your loved ones while staying safe at home.

Effective Communication Tools

There is a wide range of free video chat applications and web platforms available, providing numerous opportunities to connect with family and friends. Here are some of our top picks:

  • WhatsApp: With global availability across various devices, WhatsApp is an excellent tool for messaging, making calls, or video chatting with friends and family. The platform features end-to-end encryption for privacy. However, voice or video calls will use your mobile data if not connected to Wi-Fi, and calls to landlines are not possible. Download WhatsApp on iOS or Android, or access it on your computer.
  • Skype: After signing up for an account, Skype lets you send messages, photos, and videos to other Skype users. You can also make calls to non-Skype contacts, including landlines, though this service incurs a fee. Download Skype on iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.
  • Zoom: Initially designed for business meetings, Zoom has become one of the most popular video calling options. With features like fun backgrounds and the ability to host up to 100 participants, it’s perfect for virtual birthday parties, family gatherings, and happy hours. Note that free accounts have a 40-minute limit on calls, but affordable Pro plans can extend this time. Download Zoom on iOS or Android, or access it on your computer.
  • Google Hangouts: Many people have Gmail accounts, which makes Google Hangouts an accessible choice for video calls, allowing users to start and join meetings easily. There’s no time limit on calls, but the participant limit is set at 10. Download Google Hangouts on iOS or Android, or use it on your computer.

Devices to Enhance Connection

While apps and web platforms are useful for keeping in touch, certain devices can make those connections feel even more intimate. Here are some gadgets that can foster closeness with loved ones:

  • Alexa Devices: The Echo Show serves as Amazon’s smart display, enabling hands-free video calls with other Echo Show users or anyone with the Alexa app. It can also display your cherished photos, adding a personal touch throughout your day. Additionally, all Echo devices offer the Alexa Drop In feature, allowing for a quick voice call similar to walkie-talkies between different Echo devices across homes.
  • Facebook Portal: Facebook Portal is the company’s dedicated smart display, facilitating video chats with your Facebook friends via Messenger. Initially met with privacy concerns, it is now recognized as a user-friendly option for video calls. With the ability to add playful virtual masks and backgrounds, it offers fun interactions for families. As Facebook owns WhatsApp, calls can also be made through Portal using that platform.

Online Services for Shared Activities

Video chat is fantastic, but sometimes you want to engage in activities with friends rather than just having conversations. While some people manage to play games during video calls, these online services enhance social interaction as if you were hanging out in person:

  • Netflix Party: This free Google Chrome extension synchronizes playback and features a group chat function, allowing you to enjoy movies and TV shows with friends. Note that Netflix Party is accessible only through Chrome browsers on desktops and laptops. If you have a Chromecast device, you may have the option to cast to your TV.
  • Steam: With an extensive library of over 30,000 games and 90 million active users, Steam provides excellent social features such as friends lists and in-game chat options. It has no subscription fees, making it a great choice for budget-friendly gaming. The Remote Play Together feature lets you share your game with up to four friends online, streaming audio and video for a more connected experience.
  • Collaborative Spotify Playlists: Music lovers can connect by creating playlists together on Spotify. A collaborative playlist allows you and your friends to add songs and enjoy music anytime, anywhere. Importantly, creating and listening to a collaborative playlist doesn’t require a Premium account; however, those with free accounts can only add songs via a computer. Download Spotify on iOS or Android, or access it on your computer.
