Putting Yourself First: Designing Your Best Self

by Lisa A. Beach

In search of a new self-care mantra? Consider this: “put your own oxygen mask on first.” This philosophy encourages you to prioritize yourself on that overwhelming to-do list, particularly if you’re part of the “sandwich generation,” balancing responsibilities for both your children and your parents. No matter if you’re in your 40s, 50s, or older, you have the opportunity to feel vibrant, look fabulous, and live your life to the fullest — but it starts with making deliberate decisions that enhance your physical, social, and emotional health.

“Self-care is essential for both emotional and physical wellness. Neglecting it puts us at risk of experiencing stress’s detrimental effects. Just as we try to minimize sugar or alcohol intake, we must also manage or take breaks from stress! Engaging in self-care can help mitigate the harmful effects of chronic stress. It’s not an act of selfishness; when we prioritize self-care, we become more effective caregivers,” emphasizes Deborah Dobbs, MA, Executive Director of The Counseling Place, a non-profit organization that offers accessible professional services and educational resources.

Kickstart your self-care journey with the following suggestions:

Spoil yourself

Don’t wait for someone else to treat you to a spa experience. Make self-pampering a regular occurrence. Experiment with new nail polish colors, treat yourself to a facial, or book a hot stone massage. Consider adding essential oils to a warm bath for a relaxing boost or pick out some new lingerie. Carve out time for enjoyable and relaxing activities, like reading, painting, or tending to your garden. And aim for those eight hours of sleep each night!

Engage with loved ones

Your hectic schedule may indicate that something is out of balance if you find it challenging to spend time with family and friends. Make plans to go out for drinks, host potluck dinners, or organize a wine and cheese gathering with neighbors. Opt for phone calls instead of texts to catch up with long-distance friends. If necessary, block out social events on your calendar much like any other appointment. Establish a weekly “date night” with your partner, set aside time for coffee dates with your mom, or plan regular game nights with your family. Cultivating a positive mindset at any stage in life begins with intentional choices that nourish your body, mind, and soul — ultimately allowing you to create a life that showcases your best self. Above all, make yourself a priority.

Revitalize your style

Every age can be accompanied by great style — all it takes is discovering your personal aesthetic, identifying what flatters you, and keeping up with contemporary trends. Browse through fashion magazines for inspiration, experiment with a bold new lip color, or enlist the expertise of a stylist for personalized guidance. Consider watching makeup tutorials online to learn new techniques, and try out different hairstyles or new colors to refresh your appearance.

Update your fitness regimen

Whether you’re already exercising infrequently or following a routine that needs a shake-up, consistency is key. To reignite your motivation, consider participating in events like a Color Run or a charity walk. Exchange workout DVDs with friends to explore various types of exercise such as Pilates or hip-hop dance. If your usual workouts happen indoors, take your routine outside with a local boot camp or a morning Tai Chi class in the park. Find a workout partner to help you stay accountable.

Feed your body with nutritious foods

Opt for wholesome, fresh foods instead of relying on processed, pre-packaged options. Incorporate plenty of fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes into your diet, and stay hydrated with water rather than sugary drinks. Challenge yourself to prepare meatless meals several nights a week. Consider hiring a nutritionist to help refine your eating habits, and explore local farmers’ markets for fresh, seasonal produce. Replace “white starches” with whole grain alternatives for bread, rice, and pasta.

Embracing a positive mindset allows you to feel fantastic at any age. By making conscious, nourishing choices for your body, mind, and soul, you can craft a life that encourages the best version of yourself. Remember, prioritizing your own needs is crucial.
