Designed with a commitment to environmental consciousness, Watters Creek beautifully harmonizes with the area’s natural scenery. While the greenery of the trees and lawns is striking, the commitment extends beyond aesthetics; the entire environment, including shops and dining establishments, embraces eco-friendly initiatives. The innovative designs and spacious layout have earned Watters Creek the prestigious distinction of being the first retail development in Texas to receive LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
In addition to implementing on-site recycling facilities and utilizing reclaimed materials for its construction, Watters Creek has introduced several sustainability initiatives. By constructing buildings and parking structures vertically instead of horizontally, they maximize land use while conserving space. The center utilizes well water for its pond, creek, and irrigation, while water-saving plumbing fixtures collectively conserve an estimated 1,000 gallons of water daily. Ozone-friendly air conditioning units have been installed, and shoppers can access refillable water bottles at vending machines that dispense natural spring water at the Reuse-Refill-Refresh Station. Enhanced insulation in walls and ceilings, along with reflective rooftop materials, contribute to energy conservation, potentially saving enough energy in a single year to power 30 homes.
Tree conservation efforts are prominently showcased as well. Out of the 500 trees planted throughout Watters Creek, over 24 mature trees were salvaged from prior local developments. A 150-year-old pecan tree located by the pond has received historical recognition from the City of Allen.
Watters Creek not only champions environmental sustainability but also focuses on social responsibility. Although parking in the shopping center’s three garages is complimentary, all net revenue from metered street parking is directed to local charities through the Change for Charity initiative and supports community events held at Watters Creek.
