As a budget-conscious germaphobe and a mother of three, I’m constantly on the lookout for innovative methods to save on cleaning supplies. Fortunately, many of these budget-friendly solutions are also environmentally friendly.
Craft Your Own Cleaning Solutions
One of the simplest home cleaning formulas is a mix of equal parts water and vinegar. This blend can also serve as a cost-effective rinse agent for dishwashers, replacing pricier options like Jet Dry. Versatile and affordable, vinegar works as both a disinfectant and deodorizer, with a gallon costing just a few dollars. Its non-toxic nature is a big plus in my book. You can create various items, from all-purpose cleaners to laundry detergents. For more ideas, check out this list of 9 Homemade Cleaners You Can Make Yourself on Good Housekeeping.

Utilize Coupons and Take Advantage of Sales
If you’re inclined to buy name-brand cleaning products, keep an eye out for printable coupons on manufacturers’ websites or look for digital coupons that can be applied directly to your store loyalty card. Combining these discounts with ongoing sales can lead to significant savings.
Opt for Store Brands
In the absence of coupons, considering store brand alternatives can be a smart financial move. Check ingredient lists to determine if the store brand matches the quality of name brands.
Reduce Product Usage
Try using less than the manufacturer’s recommended amount of laundry and dishwasher detergent. Using excessive soap doesn’t necessarily lead to a cleaner outcome, and it can even damage your appliances. By reducing the amount you use, you’ll extend the lifespan of these products and save money in the process.
Switch to Rags Instead of Paper Towels
Paper towels can be quite costly and are discarded almost immediately after use, making them both wasteful and expensive. Opting for old towels, burp cloths, or worn-out t-shirts as cleaning rags allows you to recycle and reduce expenses.
Unclog Drains with Boiling Water
Rather than resorting to chemical drain cleaners, try using boiling water combined with plunging to resolve clogs. Chemical products can be pricey and may damage your plumbing over time.
Activate Energy-Saving Modes
Most dishwashers, washers, and dryers come with energy-saving settings. According to Energy.org, how you use these appliances can greatly influence your monthly utility bills. It’s recommended to run full loads of dishes, air dry when applicable, and skip scraping food off dishes before loading. Additionally, washing clothes in cold water can lead to considerable savings.

Sanitize Sponges in the Dishwasher
As sponges can harbor bacteria, it’s crucial to keep them sanitized since they’re used for cleaning. A simple way to disinfect sponges is to toss them in the dishwasher along with your dishes. Be sure to let your sponge dry out completely to inhibit bacteria growth, as moisture facilitates it.
Remove Shoes at the Entrance
Taking off your shoes before entering your home prevents dirt, mud, and germs from being tracked inside, minimizing additional mess and cleaning effort.
