How can we maintain a positive outlook during these challenging times?

Each day brings its own set of obstacles, whether they’re situational, physical, or emotional. We hear stories of individuals suffering severely due to the Coronavirus. Our hearts ache for those who have suddenly lost their jobs without any notice. We watch as our economy shifts drastically in a matter of days. During such times, it can feel as though a glimmer of hope is unattainable, yet this is precisely when we need to dig deep and find our resilience. It is crucial that we maintain our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual well-being for ourselves and those around us.

What actions can we take as we grapple with fear, anxiety, and uncertainty in today’s world? We focus on what we can control—protecting our peace and holding onto hope.

Here’s a glimpse into a hopeful approach during these times:

  1. Mindset

Pay attention to your thoughts in the first five minutes upon waking. What’s the first thing that crosses your mind in the morning?

Do I need to check the news?

Must… check… messages?

I wonder how my kids slept last night?

Where’s the remote?

FIGHT to establish a hopeful mental outlook for the day. Instead of focusing on anything else, replace initial thoughts with this affirmation: I am hopeful that today will be a positive, life-enhancing day.

The tone set in these first five minutes can influence the rest of your day. Choose to cultivate hope regardless of your circumstances.

A positive mindset fosters hope.

  1. Exercise

Engaging in physical activity early can significantly alleviate stress, help process your thoughts, and boost your energy. This can also promote healthier eating choices throughout the day. When you relieve physical tension, remaining hopeful becomes easier.

Nurturing your body promotes hope.

  1. Gratitude, Gifts, and Grace

Challenge yourself to identify all the things you are thankful for, accept the gifts you’re endowed with, and welcome grace into your life.

Throughout your day, take a moment to express gratitude for everything, from having your laundry facilities functioning to cherishing time spent with your children at home.

Recognize the strengths and gifts that you’ve been granted—from leadership to creativity. Use these talents during this period of uncertainty (16personalities.com is a valuable resource for self-discovery).

Embrace the grace offered to you, such as the ability to forgive and the capacity to love deeply.

Nurturing gratitude, recognizing your gifts, and living with grace cultivates hope.

  1. Perspective

It can be all too easy to adopt a mindset influenced by media, leaders, and those around us. Assess your perspective, and if you find yourself overwhelmed with anxiety or negativity, take the time to refocus your outlook. Remember to view life through a hopeful lens, reminding yourself that this too shall pass. Tomorrow is a fresh start. You will be okay. This is an opportunity for growth and learning, not a time to be consumed by worry.

A healthy perspective encourages hope for the future.

  1. Play… Yes, play!

In stressful times, we often forget to savor life. Try to incorporate moments of joy into your day—be silly, dance, laugh, and reconnect with your inner child. Recall the delight of running freely without worrying about being watched, playing pranks, or immersing yourself in crafts, puzzles, and cooking.

A playful spirit fosters joy and cultivates hope.
