Recently, I completed reading A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. The tale explores a man’s journey through the chaotic backdrop of 20th-century Russia, brimming with profound insights that are expressed so beautifully that you might find yourself reciting passages aloud, not only to yourself but to anyone willing to listen. Towles’ protagonist encounters a life-changing event and discovers a silver lining in friendship, history, exquisite wines, and the journey of parenthood. The members of my book club wholeheartedly embraced this exquisitely written narrative of honor, wisdom, and bravery, sprinkled with just the right amount of humor, making it an engaging read.
One passage that resonated deeply with me states, “our lives are directed by uncertainties, many of which can be disruptive or intimidating; yet, if we persist and keep our hearts generous, we might experience a moment of clarity – where everything that has transpired suddenly aligns as a necessary progression, even as we stand on the brink of a vibrant new life we were always meant to pursue.”
I have often conveyed this message to my children, now in their young adult years. Life is inherently unpredictable. The journey toward fulfillment is not merely a straight path, but instead, is laden with unexpected turns, obstacles, and delays. By the time they completed high school, they had encountered more than their share of hardships. However, grappling with sorrow provides us with the opportunity to converse, to delve into our emotional depths, to build resilience, and to commit to living with deeper intention. I am continually impressed by their abilities and their resolve to advance despite challenges, setbacks, and losses. With determination, bravery, compassion, and a healthy dose of humor guiding their journey, they are bound to discover a rich and fulfilling life. I take pride in who they have become and look forward to witnessing who they will grow into.

Note from the editor: I composed this column last month, prior to the global pandemic’s impact on our lives, and in retrospect, it feels almost surreal how unpredictable life can be. It underscores the importance of guiding our children and each other through these challenging times. I wish us all a safe passage.
