Although apple pie is often associated with traditional seasonal celebrations, this skillet variation offers a delightful twist. Begin by combining Honeycrisp apples with brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Place this mixture between two pie crusts, simmering it in a blend of brown sugar and cinnamon, then finish off with a drizzle of caramel sauce for a wonderfully gooey dessert perfect for any evening.
Skillet Apple Pie with Caramel Sauce
4 large Honeycrisp apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon, divided
1 tablespoon lemon juice
6 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup plus 2 teaspoons brown sugar
2 refrigerated pie crusts
2 teaspoons whipping cream
Caramel sauce
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the apple slices with sugar, 1 tablespoon of cinnamon, and lemon juice, ensuring the apples are well-coated. Set this mixture aside.
In an oven-safe, 10-inch nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Stir in 1/4 cup of brown sugar and the remaining cinnamon, mixing thoroughly. Allow this to boil for about 5-8 minutes.
Place one pie crust over the brown sugar mixture in the skillet. Then, layer the apple filling on top of the crust. Cover the apples with the second pie crust, cutting slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Brush whipping cream over the crust and sprinkle with the remaining brown sugar.
Bake for 35-45 minutes until the crust reaches a golden brown hue.
Finish with a drizzle of caramel sauce.
