Are We There?
Are We There Yet?
by Suzan Dees | Contributor

When I mention a road trip at home, I used to be overwhelmed by questions like, “Is there wi-fi?” and “What activities will we have?” or simply, “Do I really have to go?” Thankfully, those days are behind us. Through the wonders of the internet and a sprinkle of creativity, I’ve managed to transform our weekend getaways into adventures even my 13-year-old daughter is excited about.

Aurora, Texas – An “Out of This World” Adventure

Aurora, a quaint town with a population of just over 1,000, is a gem that’s easy to overlook. However, it’s well worth a visit. This small community gained fame due to a rumored alien spacecraft crash in 1897, with locals allegedly burying the pilot in a nearby cemetery. If you visit the charming graveyard, you’ll spot a headstone that commemorates the extraterrestrial’s final resting place.

Paris, Texas – Say “Oui Oui

How about waking your tween daughter with the surprise of a trip to Paris? No, not the one in France, but Paris, Texas. You’ll find a 65-foot replica of the Eiffel Tower, humorously adorned with a cowboy hat, right in Texas! Pack your berets for fun family photos and take a leisurely stroll through the delightful downtown area.

Tyler, Texas – Packed with Activities

If you’re traveling to East Texas, consider extending your trip with a visit to Tyler, located just 30 minutes west of Kilgore. Known as the “Rose Capital of the World,” Tyler boasts the nation’s largest rose garden and the Tyler Rose Museum, open year-round even though the Rose Festival is in October. Don’t miss the quirky Brookshire’s Wildlife Museum, where you can find an extensive collection of taxidermied animals, including monkeys playing poker—perfect fodder for your tween’s Instagram!

Waco – A “Beary” Entertaining Locale!

Waco offers a mixture of attractions that go beyond a quick stop for fuel on your way to Austin. Explore the Mammoth Site, the Dr. Pepper Museum (home to some of the tastiest Dr. Pepper you’ll ever have), and the Baylor Children’s Museum. In the warmer months, enjoy Music on the Brazos, a delightful series of free outdoor concerts along the iconic Texas riverbank.

Kilgore, Texas – “Drill” Down for Fun

Do you have a budding performer or a young entrepreneur hogging all the internet bandwidth? Disconnect from devices and explore Kilgore, which features The Rangerette Showcase and Museum along with the East Texas Oil Museum. These hidden gems in this small town are fantastic for a day trip. During summer, the Shakespeare Festival graces Kilgore while the Dogwood trees are blooming. Be sure to grab a bite at The Country Tavern, a local favorite known for its barbecue.

Pittsburg, Texas – “Head” and Shoulders Above

The final stop on our little expedition is Pittsburg, Texas. At the Northeast Texas Rural Heritage and Depot Museum, you can check out a full-scale replica of the Ezekiel airship. Legend has it that Rev. Cannon built this airship in 1901, using the book of Ezekiel as inspiration, and it managed to soar about 50 yards. Should this tale be true, it means he outdid the Wright Brothers by nearly two years! While in town, swing by and take a “selfie” with the enormous Bo Pilgrim head at Pilgrim’s Pride headquarters. This unique photo op is bound to garner lots of likes on social media and possibly embarrass your tween daughter — and let’s be honest, that adds to the fun.
