Back to School Shopping Event for Underserved Kids Hosted by Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, Dallas ISD, and JCPenney

August 10, 2017 (Dallas, TX) — On August 7, 2017, Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities, in collaboration with the Dallas Independent School District and title sponsor JCPenney, distributed 3,000 brand new school uniforms, valued at $150,000, to students from seven under-resourced elementary schools within the district. The Ellis Davis Field House was transformed into a “pop-up shop,” creating an authentic shopping atmosphere for students from Carr Elementary, Jill Stone Elementary, Paul Dunbar Learning Center, Elisha Pease Elementary, Rice Elementary, McNair Elementary, and JW Ray Elementary.

“This year’s back-to-school initiative is the most extensive to date. We aim to ensure that as many children as possible kick off the school year with positivity—equipped with clean uniforms, glasses if needed, and a nourishing meal,” Emmitt Smith remarked. “Our partners and sponsors exemplify the spirit of giving back; their support has enabled us to continue this endeavor for four years. They resonate with my wife Pat and me on the importance of education.”

This year, Axxess served as the leading sponsor and creative partner, offering arts and crafts activities and face painting. DECA Dental conducted dental screenings and offered services, while Essilor Vision provided students with vision screenings and free glasses. JCPenney and San Francisco Barbers offered grooming and haircut services, and Albertsons/Tom Thumb prepared lunches along with healthy groceries for families to take home. Additionally, McDonald’s supplied books for every student, and the Dallas ISD Community Police Team interacted with students and their families.

“What began with a single student seeking uniform assistance has now grown to over 7,000 Dallas ISD students receiving not just uniforms, but also complimentary dental and eye screenings, food, and books, thanks to Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities leading the charge for Dallas ISD,” stated Superintendent Michael Hinojosa. He noted that in the past three years, the organization has provided more than 7,000 uniforms to those in need. The district recognized the Pat & Emmitt Smith Charities with the 2016 “Leading the Charge Award” for their collaborative efforts with community partners to support students.

Rock-T from The Ricky Smiley Morning Show energized attendees, amplifying their enthusiasm for the shopping experience. Emmitt Smith honored Dr. Sulman Ahmed from DECA Dental and Carol Roberts from Albertsons with awards of recognition for their unwavering commitment and support of the Back to School event over the past four years. The day featured entertainment by the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, as well as performances from the Thomas Jefferson High School Modern Band and the David W. Carter High School Band.
