Significance of Family Traditions

by Kristin Cicciarelli | Contributor

The festive season is approaching, reminding us to cherish our fondness for brands like Walt Disney, Apple, and gaming systems like Wii. Hold on—there’s a catch! Shouldn’t our holidays truly revolve around family and friends? Shared moments? A chance for introspection? How about taking time to show gratitude for the blessings we already possess?

The answer is a resounding yes. However, try convincing your longing children who are compiling gift lists as extensive as a legal document while their peers seem to be acquiring “all the latest (insert item here).” How can parents strike a balance between living in a materialistic society and instilling in their kids the essence of giving over receiving?

Mary Sanger, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and the Founder/CEO of Insights Collaborative Therapy Group in Dallas, believes that fostering family traditions is crucial. “Family traditions provide a sense of cultural and religious identity,” Sanger explains. “They convey a family’s values and belief system, offering children a solid foundation as they seek their own identity. Traditions connect them to their family across generations and serve as a stabilizing influence against societal pressures to conform to materialism.”

Children will inevitably make requests for items. It’s enjoyable and fulfilling to see them unwrap gifts. However, overindulgence often leads to unrealistic expectations and diminished appreciation. Instead of overwhelming them with presents, focus on gifting your time. “Engaging in quality family time helps kids step outside their comfort zones, build relationships, have meaningful fun, and contribute to others they care about,” Sanger asserts.

This year, aim to guide your children in redirecting the holiday spirit towards togetherness and the cherished family traditions, both traditional and new. You will undoubtedly craft unforgettable memories that will remain with them far longer than last year’s gaming console.

Suggestions for Establishing New Family Traditions

• Salvation Army “Adopt an Angel” Tree – Community organizations, schools, and religious establishments host giving initiatives shortly after Thanksgiving. Schedule a family date to select an ornament from the tree and go shopping together for a less fortunate child.

• Family Reading Night – Set aside an evening for everyone to gather and listen as one person reads a holiday-themed book or excerpt. Rotate the reading duties annually and don’t forget the hot cocoa, marshmallows, and perhaps a cozy fire.

• Volunteer Together – Whether baking cookies for a charity, helping serve at a soup kitchen, or raising funds for donations, involve the kids in these efforts. There is no greater lesson than learning through participation.

• Decorate Together – Just because older kids have busy social lives doesn’t mean parents should handle all the holiday decorations alone. Children love being part of setting up holiday decorations, so invite them to join in.

• Culinary Traditions – Food holds a unique power to honor your family’s heritage, introduce cultural elements into your customs, or simply gather for enjoyable meals. Whether it’s Grandma’s special biscuit recipe or takeout from your children’s favorite upscale restaurant, serve something distinctive that you wouldn’t have on an ordinary day, creating something exciting to anticipate for each holiday.
