Book Review: Generational Lessons from Dad

By Lilly Pidgeon | Editor-in-Chief, Rodrigosaffiliates Magazine

Brian Baleno’s memoir captivates from the start, chronicling the moment his life changed forever due to a 5 A.M. phone call. His deep love and commitment to family shine through immediately, evoking a sense of admiration for the remarkable connection within their family, even as they face the poignant challenge of the health crisis afflicting Tony Baleno, Brian’s father. The principles that shaped Tony during his upbringing are shared by many parents: cherish relationships, treat everyone with respect, exercise financial prudence, uphold your promises, remain humble and disciplined, and own your responsibilities. Ultimately, as Tony often advised, “live without regrets” when reflecting on your life.

“Most regrets arise from missed opportunities,” Brian reflects, illustrating his father’s composure amid a health crisis and how that pivotal experience transformed his own perspective. This memoir is more than an inspiring account of a family grounded in multi-generational values; it serves as a poignant reminder to embrace opportunities, have faith, and cultivate a lasting legacy of love.

“This image captures a moment at Christmas, reflecting how Tony Baleno guided his sons to manhood,” shares Brian (far right) alongside his brothers and father.

Brian states: “This photo illustrates the bond and affection between Tony Baleno and his daughters, revealing the gentle side of my father known only to a select few.” (Left to Right): Kim, Tony, and Katie
“This image honors two significant life milestones. First, it marks the wedding of Tony and Robin’s youngest daughter, Katie, and also signifies the deep love and unity my parents fostered in our family,” says author Brian Baleno, shown here on the far left with his cherished family. GLF:
What is the primary takeaway you hope readers gain from your book?

BB: I want readers to understand the significance of prioritizing family above all. This was the most important lesson I inherited from my dad.

GLF: This journey is personal, yet you chose to share it broadly. What drove you to do that?

BB: I wanted to share my father’s story, as well as the narratives of the generations before him, in hopes that others could extract valuable life lessons, especially regarding the significance of family, selflessness, humility, kindness, and honesty.

GLF: What stands out as your favorite “Dad and Brian” moment?

BB: My most cherished memory is the day I departed Pittsburgh to move to Atlanta for work. As I prepared to embark on the 700-mile journey in my 1999 Chevy Cavalier, my dad offered me his hand. I initially thought he was offering gas money, but it became clear he was extending a handshake—a significant moment where he acknowledged me as an adult. My mother stood nearby, tears in her eyes, and it struck me that this was a moment of pride, a heartfelt farewell.
