A few years ago, I penned an article about the invaluable lessons our pets can teach us. Sadly, yesterday, our beloved Labrador Retriever, Aspen, succumbed to her courageous fight against cancer. In light of this loss, I wish to share some additional life lessons inspired by her presence.

- Accept your grief. Experiencing profound sorrow is a natural response, and it’s important to allow children to express their feelings candidly. In our darkest moments, we come to understand the depth of our love.
- Understand the importance of letting go. While perseverance is often encouraged, there are instances when it’s necessary to release our grasp. Embracing the act of letting go teaches us that not everything is within our control, regardless of our wishes. It invites us to lean on our faith for support, and it exemplifies kindness towards ourselves and others.
- Time brings healing. While the saying goes that time mends all wounds, it may not hold true for every hurt. However, I believe healing is a journey, and while pain may not vanish completely, it tends to diminish with time.
- Don’t shy away from tears. Allow yourself to cry and grieve your loss fully. Once you’ve expressed that sadness, seek joy by reminiscing about the treasured moments that you wouldn’t trade for anything.
Heartbreak serves as a lesson from life.
