Navigating College for Kids

While your child may have opted for a nearby college, that wouldn’t have been as adventurous! With the back-to-school season nearing, it’s time to organize your plans.

Driving vs. Flying

Many parents choose to drive their children to college since a minivan can hold a considerable amount of belongings. However, if the university is located on the opposite coast, this may not be feasible; don’t forget to factor in your time, along with gas and lodging expenses, to make the best decision.

Avoid Overweight Fees

Airlines typically impose extra charges for bags exceeding 50 pounds, with fees significantly increasing for bags over 70 pounds. The overweight fee can often surpass the standard checked bag fee, and if you exceed the weight limit, you might end up paying both. It’s essential to apply some logic here. If a flight allows free checked bags and costs $600, whereas another charges for bags and is priced at $200, do the calculations wisely.

Transferring Items from Point A to Point B

A few years back, my recommendation was straightforward: one parent travels alongside the student, with each carrying two packed suitcases (with the parent getting minimal space). However, considering the current airline regulations that have changed, my advice has also evolved.

Shipping vs. Ground Transportation

Get in touch with your preferred shipping company to find the most economical shipping methods for your boxes. The UPS site features a convenient time and cost estimator; they also provide luggage boxes that you may find useful. It’s a good idea to compare rates with other shipping services as well.

Learn What NOT to Bring to College

If traveling by air, avoid bringing large or heavy items. Excess weight can lead to significant extra costs, which is the last thing you want when addressing out-of-state tuition. Bring your laptop on the plane, and consider purchasing other essentials once you arrive.

Opt for Airlines Offering a Free Bag Allowance

Airlines frequently adjust their fees without prior notice, so it’s important to check before flying. Currently, Southwest Airlines permits passengers to check two bags free of charge.

What to Purchase Upon Arrival in Your School’s City

Make sure you reach the university in time for a shopping trip to gather necessary items. Some essentials for dorm or apartment living include:

•Bedding/Pillows/Towels

•Bathroom supplies

•Computer and printer necessities

•Writing utensils/Notebooks (do kids still utilize those?)

•Reusable water bottles/Snacks

•Microwave and/or dorm fridge

•Desk lamp

•Fan
