Innovative and Unforgettable Graduation Party Ideas
by Bobbie Ames | Section Editor
As high school graduation season arrives, the number of celebratory gatherings is bound to increase. Are you considering hosting a party? How can you ensure it remains memorable while also establishing rules for safety?
Regardless of your approach, a little careful planning can result in a thoughtful and joyous event. The essence of my advice is straightforward: it is entirely possible to organize a celebration that avoids chaos, but it requires a proactive mindset. When gatherings occur without appropriate adult supervision, or if adults turn a blind eye, things can quickly spiral out of control, leading to poor decisions and jeopardizing your child’s promising future. Let’s agree, as parents, to avoid being that host and never let it become one of those parties. Will your child be annoyed? Perhaps, but this certainly isn’t the first or last time they may roll their eyes at your rules.
Randi Mazzella, a freelance writer for Raising Teens magazine and mother of three, highlighted in a recent article, “Teens often perceive drinking at events as a rite of passage, despite not being legally of age. They fear missing out or being perceived as unpopular if they don’t participate. While some parents might implement relaxed rules like collecting car keys at the start of a party to prevent drunk driving, alcohol at these gatherings poses further risks. These include accidents, fights, and other harmful behaviors.”
Robert Chaiken, a lawyer with extensive experience dealing with cases involving underage drinking, warns of the potential legal ramifications for both teens and adults when alcohol is present at parties. “An unsupervised event is a disaster waiting to happen and can severely impact a teen’s future,” Chaiken states. He recommends controlling guest lists, setting strict timeframes, keeping the celebration in a centralized location to discourage wandering, and seeking assistance from older teens or adults for supervision inside and outside. “This not only respects your neighbors but can also deter outside gatherings where trouble may start.”
Let’s Celebrate
If you’re keen on hosting a graduation party, consider the following recommendations to ensure a controlled and enjoyable experience:
1) Send out invitations and request RSVPs.
2) Limit the guest list to a manageable number (personally, I suggest capping it at 20 graduates).
3) Invite the parents of graduates and other influential adults in your child’s life, such as grandparents, cousins, coaches, and beloved teachers.
4) Aim to hold the gathering during the day.
The timing of the event, the guest count, and the combination of adults and young adults can greatly (though not entirely) minimize the risk of things getting out of hand. You might also consider hosting the party at a place that offers engaging activities or entertainment. Here are some fun ideas:
Sunday Brunch
This option is perfect for a more subdued graduate with a small guest list. If hosting at home, consider setting up a waffle bar or letting attendees create their own granola parfaits.
Food Truck Extravaganza
Transform your backyard by inviting a variety of food trucks for an enjoyable daytime celebration. The options are limitless! If you have access to a pool, incorporate swimming into the festivities.
Pin Stack Bowling Gathering
Pin Stack, a new venue in Plano, caters to parties of all sizes and offers complete food and drink services. It’s a hassle-free choice!
Frisco Roughriders Pool Celebration
Did you know that you can reserve the pool at Dr. Pepper Stadium? Enjoy swimming while watching a game, and have personal attendants serve freshly grilled dishes and refreshing beverages as you unwind.
And of course, congratulations to your graduate!
