Plan Ahead, Stay Flexible

It’s hard to dispute the critical role that perseverance plays in our lives. The drive to succeed, a consistent focus on our objectives, and the steadfastness to push through obstacles, failures, or resistance are commendable qualities. However, there are moments when holding on too tightly to a plan becomes counterproductive. This is where the concept of “The Pivot” becomes essential.

Pivoting involves recognizing when the path you’ve committed to, after investing considerable time and energy, is no longer the right one to pursue. Much like in basketball, where one foot remains planted while the other steps off in a new direction, pivoting is a vital skill in navigating life’s journey. It enables us to apply what we’ve learned thus far while making crucial adjustments to reach our goals successfully.

Embracing a pivot demands significant self-reflection, courage, and determination. Often, we hesitate to pivot out of fear of how our friends and family might perceive us, worrying they might think we’ve wavered, given up, or faced failure. Yet, it is crucial to accept that our initial plan, although valid at the outset, may no longer serve us effectively. Adjusting our strategy while remaining goal-oriented compels us to grow and learn. So, in addition to tenacity and resolve, let’s encourage our children to cultivate adaptability as a key trait.

While perseverance has always come easily to me, I admit I struggle with the art of pivoting. I firmly hold on to my beliefs and have often assumed that greater effort would lead me to the desired outcome. Nevertheless, I’ve taught my children—now aged 18, 20, and 21—to think ahead while being prepared to change direction if needed. I remind them that while perseverance is commendable, rigidity can be detrimental. I encourage them to be strong and unwavering, yet to consistently reassess and rethink their strategies. This year, I’m committed to practicing what I preach by embracing “The Pivot” in my own life, and I look forward to the personal and professional transformations that this change will bring.
