Young Adult Literature Overview
By Melissa Chaiken | Section Editor

The current landscape of Young Adult (YA) literature offers a plethora of exceptional choices for adolescents. In recent years, the YA sector has witnessed substantial growth, with the overall quality of narratives markedly on the rise. This evolution excites me deeply!

As a passionate reader and a mother to two teenagers, this shift has enriched my personal reading list and provided ample opportunities for shared literary experiences. It might surprise some, but I thoroughly enjoy YA fiction. Before you rush to judge my literary preferences, I encourage you to explore YA titles for yourself.

There is a wealth of impressive storytelling targeted at young readers today. This is significant, as compelling narratives inspire teens to immerse themselves in books. Parents are likely to appreciate many of these YA stories for a variety of reasons: Firstly, they often delve into profound emotional themes while also being entertaining and well-crafted. Secondly, these novels can foster connections between parents and teens, providing common ground for discussion. Lastly, with many YA books being adapted into films, you and your teen can enjoy going to the theater together—or, if they prefer, watch from the comfort of home when they’re less inclined to be seen with you! It could even blossom into a family book club involving all your children and their significant others.

Below is a selection of outstanding YA novels available today:

The 17-year-old protagonist, Theo, is consumed by thoughts of mortality and various means of ending his life. The fallout from his parents’ divorce and his father’s abandonment in favor of a new family has left him adrift. In parallel, we meet Violet, a classmate who longs to escape their small Indiana town after grappling with the emotional turmoil stemming from her sister’s tragic death in an accident, which she feels culpable for. Their lives intersect on the ledge of the school bell tower one day, sparking rumors that it’s Violet who rescues Theo from jumping. After all, she’s the attractive cheerleader linked to the popular quarterback, while Theo’s labeled as the outcast, “Theodore Freak”. As fate pairs them for a school project to uncover the natural beauty of their state, they not only discover the wonders around them but also within themselves. This unconventional love story reveals how two flawed teens can find joy, connection, and healing amid their struggles. Niven’s nuanced writing addresses mental health with candor and a touch of humor. All the Bright Places ultimately is a poignant exploration of loss and the journey toward healing. I challenge anyone to finish this book without shedding a tear.

The narrative unfolds from their distinct points of view: Noah’s chapters reflect their lives at thirteen, while Jude shares her perspective at sixteen. Their unbreakable bond starts to fracture as they approach adolescence and begin to understand their identities. Noah grapples with his sexual orientation, while both twins contend with rivalry surrounding their applications to an esteemed art school and parental approval, as well as vying for the affection of a boy living next door. Their journey becomes one of separation and estrangement, each facing personal drama and family upheavals. Nelson’s prose is enchanting, filled with vibrant imagery. Readers will find themselves laughing uproariously and feeling heartache as Jude and Noah navigate their tumultuous journey back to one another.
